Owen Payton Memorial Scholarship

Award: One $1,000 scholarship

The purpose of the Edwardsburg Public Schools Foundation and the Owen Payton Memorial Scholarship is to recognize students who demonstrate significant improvement in academic performance while attending Edwardsburg High School. Also considered in the scholarship award will be his/her educational commitment, and involvement in school and community activities.

Highest level of consideration given to students pursuing a degree in Political Science or Social Work.

Owen Payton was a Junior at Edwardsburg Public Schools and was also dual-enrolled at Southwestern Michigan College, with classes in Public Speaking and Sociology. Owen was an athlete on the track team, running huddles, as well as a member of the Edwardsburg Equestrian Team with his horse, Reba. Owen was a strong believer in hard work and excelled in school with a few AP classes, but also understood that sometimes an average grade is a part of it too if the effort was put into learning. Owen loved school, he admired many of his teachers and knew they were to be respected. 

Along with sports, academics and Equestrian team, Owen was an active member of our community. He attended monthly township hall meetings and loved working the polls for Ontwa Township. He dedicated his spring and fall season to refereeing soccer for the EYSA program,teaching children the rules and a love for the game. Owen was also a member of 4H, where he spent many hours preparing rabbits to sell, riding his horse for competitions and entering his woodworking. Owen believed in encouraging others to get involved and being a good example for the youth of the community.  He always had a positive attitude and a bright smile to welcome everyone and welcome them into the community.

Owen Payton Memorial Scholarship Criteria

In preparing the scholarship application, please pay close attention to the following criteria and factors for consideration:

• Scholarship candidates will be evaluated for embodying the ideals and values of community: volunteering, encouragement, commitment, honesty, accountability selflessness, kindness, and respect.
• While athletic and academic standings are applauded, scholarship candidates will be evaluated for their efforts in the community and character at school.
• Greatest consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate a track record of community involvement and respect directed at staff and fellow classmates. Applicants and their letter of recommendation should cite specific examples in which the scholarship candidate displayed extraordinary selflessness and kindness to another individual. While encouraging and helping those around them.

 

• General Guidelines
• The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Edwardsburg High School.Applicants cannot be part of the Early Middle College program offered through the Edwardsburg High School.
• Scholarship applicants must be enrolled full-time in a college, university, or post-secondary vocational school for the upcoming fall term. The scholarship award will be paid to the institution and is to be used for tuition, room and board or other related college/university expenses.
• The recipient must exhibit academic improvement in their high school career to qualify for the scholarship.
• The Scholarship Committee of the Edwardsburg Public Schools Foundation will decide who is to receive the scholarship based on the attached application information.
• A representative of said committee will announce the winning senior at the Honors Convocation, with the actual scholarship funds received for the following fall semester.
